Water treatment is the part of plumbing with the most oversold equipment in it, so our approach starts by working out whether you need anything at all.

The Bay Area is unusually split on this. Homes supplied from Hetch Hetchy get water that is already soft — installing a softener there solves a problem you don’t have. Parts of the South Bay drawing on groundwater run considerably harder, and there the scale genuinely does shorten the life of your water heater and leave deposits on every fixture. Same county, different answer.

So we look at what your supply actually is before recommending equipment. From there the job is usually one of three things:

Softening for genuine hardness — sized to the household’s water use, plumbed with a bypass so the system can be serviced or taken offline without cutting water to the house.

Whole-house filtration for taste, odour, sediment or chloramine. A carbon system handles the disinfectant taste most people are actually complaining about, and it’s a far smaller job than a full treatment install.

Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. The most thorough option for dissolved contaminants, and correctly limited to the tap you actually drink from.

All of it gets installed with proper bypass and isolation valves, so servicing it later doesn’t mean shutting down the house. That sounds obvious and it’s routinely skipped — we’ve replaced a lot of systems that were plumbed straight in with no way to isolate them.

We'd rather test first. The right system depends on your supply, and the wrong one is an expensive way to solve nothing.

Common questions

Do I even need a softener here?
It depends entirely on where your water comes from, and the Bay Area is genuinely split. Areas supplied from Hetch Hetchy get notably soft water and a softener is usually a waste of money. Parts of the South Bay drawing on groundwater run much harder, and there a softener earns its keep. We'd rather test than sell you one by default.
What's the difference between a softener and a filter?
A softener targets hardness — the calcium and magnesium that scale your fixtures and shorten a water heater's life. A filter targets taste, odour and particulates. They solve different problems, and plenty of homes need one and not the other.
Why does my water taste or smell of chlorine?
Most Bay Area supply is disinfected with chloramine. It's safe to drink and a whole-house carbon filter removes the taste and smell. If that's your only complaint, that's a much smaller job than a full treatment system.
Is reverse osmosis worth it?
For drinking and cooking water, often yes — it's the most thorough option for dissolved contaminants. It's an under-sink system with its own faucet, not a whole-house one, because treating every toilet and shower to drinking standard makes no sense.
How much maintenance is involved?
Softeners need salt topped up periodically. Filters need cartridges or media changed on a schedule that depends on your usage and water. We'll tell you the real interval for your system rather than a generic one.

Recent plumbing work

Heat pump water heater with recirculation

Installed a Rheem heat pump water heater with an expansion tank and a recirculation pump, running dedicated hot, cold and recirculation lines to manufacturer spec. Hot water now reaches the far fixtures without the long wait a heat pump tank can otherwise introduce — and the household is ahead of the Bay Area zero-NOx replacement deadline rather than scrambling when the old tank failed.

Smart toilet installation

Smart toilet installation

Removed the old fixture, adjusted the rough-in and supply, and set and sealed the new unit — clean finish, no leaks.

Whole-house carbon filtration

Whole-house carbon filtration

Fitted a whole-house carbon filtration system on the incoming supply with isolation valves for cartridge changes. Removes the chloramine taste at every fixture rather than treating one tap at a time.
